Below is the word cloud I created to see if students could ascertain which artist I was describing by looking at the words in the word cloud. If you can recognize the artist in the word cloud, then maybe it could be useful tool in the art classroom.

ReplyDeleteThat is Rodd Lucier's blog. He is on Delicious as well as "thecleversheep". He has some idea's on how to use wordle in the classroom and seems like the perfect person for us all to network with for this class.
I like your Wordle example and I think it would be a great way to get students excited to learn about a new artist in the classroom. Even though it's simple, I think this concept of using a Wordle is great and would have a lot of use in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteJust by having students look at the same text created in several word clouds using different fonts, colors, layout etc can teach a lot about art. This could also provoke student conversation about how to look at and critique art. Questions such as: Why does the wordle in neon colors provoke a different feeling than the same wordle in subdued colors? Would be a wonderful art learning experience.
ReplyDeleteWow Phil you have a lot of great information added to this blog. The video is nice so people can see visually what you are talking about (specifically people who don't know what Wordle is).
ReplyDeleteI think that you have good ideas of how already to use social tagging and wordle in the classroom. Having students guess the artist is a great idea. I think all of us together are coming up with great uses in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI think a word cloud can be effective in the art classroom. It will allow students to broaden their vocabulary about a medium or artist.
ReplyDeleteI think that wordles can most definately be useful in the classroom. As a matter of fact, I have already begun to use them, the very same way you have created yours. I gave a mini-assignment to some students to research an artist and create a wordle that describes the artist. I also shared the website with the computer at my school and it put the link on our homepage so that it may be used right away. Wordles are a nice way to incorporate interdisciplinary learning too: connecting language arts, math, social studies with art. You can change the font and design the background with colors. At the least, it is designing. I think you will find that a wordle could be a very useful tool when you need them.
